Whiskey and rum are two different types of alcoholic beverages that are made from different ingredients. They are often confused as they have a similar color and appearance, however they differ in taste and smell.

Whiskey is obtained by distillation of fermented malt (cereals such as barley, wheat, rye and corn) then aged in wooden barrels (mostly white oak). It has a 40 and 62% alcoholic concentration.

Whiskey could be differentiated into these main types: malt whiskey, grain whiskey, blended whiskey, rye whiskey or canadian rye, tennessee whiskey and bourbon.

Rum are distilled alcoholic beverages made from sugarcane by-products such as molasses or sugarcane juices. Similar to most alcoholic beverages, rums must go through the process of distillation, fermentation, and aging. It reaches a concentration of ethyl alcohol between about 30 and 40%. You can find a wide variety of types of rum. Whether it is the sweet rum or the frosty rum that has a greater amount of sucrose; however, the  white (transparent with a slight yellowish hue that is stored in wooden barrels), gold (from spirits also stored in oak or cherry containers), aged (stored in wooden barrels less than 1 year) and the old (kept in barrels for less than 3 years).

  1. Rum is sweeter in flavor than whiskey.
  2.  Whiskey is gold in color while rum is available in light, dark, and gold variations.
  3. Whiskey is distilled only once, while rum is distilled twice.
  4. Rum originated in the West Indies where it was made by slaves working on sugar plantations. On the other hand, whiskey originated in Ireland but became popular when it was made in Scotland.

Similarities between rum and whisky

So, it is clear that rum and whiskey are very different but we might definitely drink and enjoy them the same. I, for instance, love to drink a premium rum or a good whisky (minimum 12 years old) in a short glass on the rocks, also I like to drink with soda or sparkling water.
